Everything from the incredible build up of the intro of this song, all the way through Tom’s beautiful and emotional singing at the last few verses… this is hands down one of my favorite songs of all time. Every note of this song hits me in such a unique way

In December of 2011 I was living in my car, and I was begging God to give me the strength to not use heroin anymore. I was miserable, alone, and I was too young to die without having lived life. I had everything I needed to end it that night on my lap, and as I prayed this song came on. When the guitar solo at the end started I attained an inner strength full of emotions I hadn’t felt in forever, and I finally destroyed everything and threw it in a nearby trashcan. I drove home and begged my mom to let me back in, and she saw how broken I was and desperate to be loved again, and allowed me back home…on the condition I’d never use again. 12 years later and I’m still sober, and close to getting my addiction counselor license, while also currently working at a rehab/detox unit. Amidst the last 12 years I’ve lost my mom, two of my best friends, a girlfriend, went through 4 years of trauma therapy, did DBT and acceptance and commitment therapy, and discovered the right medication for my anxiety and bipolar. Even now, when this song comes on, and I hear the beauty of that guitar piece, that same sense of strength and emotion arises, and no matter what I’ve gone through and experienced, Tom and Angels and Airwaves creating this song single handily saved my life…not just in 2011, but for 12 years straight. Remember, YOU, the one reading this, are worth it. This world is more beautiful with you in it; and you don’t need permission to exist. If I can do it, you can too 💜 Be strong, angels.
